FORGING PATHS TO UNDERSTANDING

The Center for Family Systems Theory of Western New York, Inc. provides education, training, and consultation grounded in Bowen Family Systems Theory to diverse individuals and groups.

We serve mental health professionals, families, business owners, and professionals from various fields, empowering them to apply systems thinking in their personal lives, professional practices, and organizations. Our mission is to expand the understanding and application of Bowen theory, enhancing relationships, decision-making, and overall functioning across multiple life domains.

OUR ROOTS

The Center for Family Systems Theory of Western New York, Inc. (CFST) emerged from a rich legacy of family systems work in our region. For years, Rev. Dr. Bob Perelli CJM was a pioneering force, teaching and coaching individuals using Bowen theory to navigate life’s complexities. His leadership, most recently through The Center for Family Systems Theory of WNY, left an indelible mark on our community. Although Fr. Bob’s untimely passing in August 2022 created a significant void, it also sparked new opportunities to honor his legacy through continued education and coaching in family systems theory.

CFST stands as the regional provider of education, training, and consulting services rooted in Bowen Family Systems Theory. We respond to the growing desire among both new and experienced clinicians to deepen their understanding of effective family therapy. By offering accessible, ongoing learning opportunities, we enhance professional competence and confidence in applying Bowen theory, ultimately making family assistance more impactful.

Our approach reflects Fr. Bob’s enduring wisdom – that Bowen Family Systems Theory holds immense promise for helping families. This framework engages a family’s inherent agency and autonomy, honors their wisdom, enhances family-led functioning, and reduces reliance on multiple external professionals. To maintain and grow this wisdom, we provide regular opportunities for practitioners to expand their knowledge, develop skills, and build confidence in family systems approaches.

By growing the capacity of helping professionals to understand and utilize Bowen theory, we also address the increasing demand for assistance in a resource-limited environment. Families often face multiple, co-occurring challenges that traditionally require engagement with several professionals. Our approach aims to streamline this process, reducing the potential stress of navigating multiple appointments and potentially conflicting approaches during already challenging times.

At CFST, we believe that building confidence through knowledge and skills development increases the capacity of individuals to undertake family work effectively. This, in turn, enhances the overall ability of systems to respond to families facing challenges with both efficacy and respect. Through our work, we continue to lay the groundwork for more integrated, family-centered support in Western New York.

Vision of Interconnected Growth

Our vision is to weave Bowen Family Systems Theory into the fabric of Western New York, creating a thriving ecosystem where individuals, families, organizations, and communities leverage systems thinking to enhance their resilience, health, and well-being. We aim to:

  • Empower mental health professionals with advanced skills to support families effectively.
  • Equip business leaders and professionals with tools to navigate complex family dynamics in their work.
  • Provide individuals and families direct access to life-changing systems concepts.
  • Foster a network of Bowen theory practitioners across diverse sectors.
  • Cultivate a regional culture that values and applies systems thinking in daily life

By making Bowen Family Systems Theory an integral part of our region’s approach to problem-solving and growth, we lay the groundwork for generational improvements in family, organizational, and community functioning. As we perfect this model in Western New York, we aspire to extend our impact to communities beyond, creating a ripple effect of positive change through the power of systems thinking.
